Jalna Fort, locally known as Bhuikot Fort, is the historic heart of Jalna city — a ground-level (bhuikot) fortification rather than the hilltop forts more commonly associated with Maharashtra.
History
The fort dates to the Nizam era, when Jalna served as an important administrative and trading town within the Hyderabad State. Unlike the hill forts of western Maharashtra (built for defensive elevation), "bhuikot" forts like this one were built on flat ground to protect towns and administrative centers across the Marathwada plains — a fort-building style shared with other Marathwada towns such as Ausa and Naldurg.
What to See
The fort's fortification walls and bastions remain, reflecting the military architecture of the period. Parts of the complex are today used for government and administrative purposes, so interior access can be limited — most visitors explore the exterior walls and gateways.
