Across the gorge from the cave complex sits the Ajanta Viewpoint, the spot from which the caves' horseshoe layout can be seen in full — and, according to local accounts, close to where the site was first rediscovered by a British officer in 1819 while hunting tiger.
The Classic Panorama
From here, all 30 caves are visible in one sweep along the curved cliff face above the river, framed by the forested hills — the single most photographed view of Ajanta and very different from the close-up cave interiors most visitors focus on.
Getting There
The viewpoint is reached via a short uphill walk from the main cave complex, or by a connecting path/shuttle depending on current park arrangements — it adds roughly 30-45 minutes to a visit including the walk and time to take in the view.
Best Time for Photos
Late afternoon light works particularly well here, catching the cliff face and river below in warm tones — worth timing the end of your cave visit to finish at the viewpoint for sunset light if your schedule allows.
