Ajanta can technically be visited most of the year since the caves themselves are carved into rock and unaffected by weather, but the experience of getting there and walking the site varies a lot by season.
October to March โ The Best Window
Cooler, drier weather makes this the most comfortable period for the walk along the cliff face and the shuttle bus queues, with clear daytime skies also giving the best light for photography at the caves and the viewpoint.
Monsoon (July-September)
The Waghora River gorge and surrounding hills turn lush and green, and a seasonal waterfall near the caves becomes active โ a beautiful time to visit if you don't mind occasional rain and slippery walkways.
Summer (April-June)
Temperatures in this part of Maharashtra get very hot, and the shuttle queues and open walkways offer little shade โ plan an early morning visit if travelling in this season.
Weekly Closure
Ajanta Caves are closed on Mondays โ double check this before travelling, especially if Ajanta is the sole purpose of your trip that day.
