Grishneshwar Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, and among the most significant pilgrimage sites in Maharashtra, located just a short distance from the Ellora Caves.
History
The current structure was rebuilt in the 18th century under the patronage of Ahilyabai Holkar, the Maratha queen known for reconstructing several major temples across India after earlier structures had fallen into disrepair or been damaged.
Architecture
The temple is built from red volcanic (basalt) stone typical of the Deccan region, with detailed carvings on its five-tiered shikhara (tower) and a sculpted courtyard that reflects classic South Indian and Maratha-era temple design influences.
Combining with Ellora
Because Grishneshwar sits so close to the Ellora Caves complex, it's easily and commonly visited on the same trip — many travellers stop here either before or after touring the caves.
