The Mahalaxmi Temple (also called Ambabai Temple) in Kolhapur is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas — sites believed to mark where parts of the goddess Sati fell — and among the most important pilgrimage destinations in Maharashtra, with origins tracing back to around the 7th century.
The Deity and Idol
The temple's black stone idol of Goddess Mahalaxmi is intricately carved and adorned daily with fresh flowers and jewellery, drawing a steady stream of devotees from across the state, especially heavy during Navratri.
The Kirnotsav Phenomenon
For a few days each year (typically around late January and early November), the setting sun's rays align precisely to fall directly on the idol for a few minutes — an astronomical alignment built into the temple's original design, known as Kirnotsav, and one of its most remarkable features.
Architecture
The temple complex reflects a blend of Chalukya and later Maratha-era architectural styles, with detailed stone carving throughout the mandapa (hall) and shikhara (tower).
Visiting Tips
Mornings and evenings see the heaviest devotee footfall — if you'd prefer a quieter visit to appreciate the architecture, a mid-morning weekday visit outside festival periods works best.
