Pratapgad Fort, a short drive from Mahabaleshwar, is one of the most historically significant forts associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji — the site of a famous 1659 encounter that changed the course of Maratha history.
The Battle of Pratapgad
It was here that Shivaji met the Bijapur Sultanate general Afzal Khan for a supposed peace negotiation, during which Shivaji, anticipating betrayal, used a concealed "tiger claw" weapon (bagh nakh) to kill Khan — a pivotal moment that boosted Maratha confidence and territory significantly.
What to See
The fort is divided into upper and lower sections connected by fortified pathways, with a temple to Bhavani Devi (Shivaji's family deity), his statue, and sweeping views over the Sahyadri range from the ramparts.
Visiting Tips
The fort involves a moderate amount of walking and some steps — comfortable footwear is recommended, and allow around 2 hours for a thorough visit including the walk up.
