Sinhagad Fort, perched on a hill roughly an hour from Pune, is one of Maharashtra's most popular trekking destinations — combining a historic hilltop fort with a moderate, accessible climb that draws both serious trekkers and casual weekend visitors.
The Battle of Sinhagad
The fort is famous for the 1670 Battle of Sinhagad, in which the Maratha general Tanaji Malusare led a daring night assault to recapture the fort, scaling the cliff near what is now called Kalyan Darwaza — Tanaji died in the battle, but the fort was won, prompting Shivaji's famous remark "gad ala, pan sinha gela" ("the fort is won, but the lion is lost").
The Trek
The climb takes roughly 1.5-2 hours and is considered moderate, suitable for most reasonably fit visitors, with a paved road option available for those who'd rather drive most of the way up.
Food at the Top
Sinhagad is almost as famous for its food as its history — stalls at the summit serve kanda bhajji (onion fritters) and pithla bhakri, a local favourite especially during the cooler monsoon season when the fort draws large crowds.
Best Time to Visit
Early morning for a sunrise trek is popular, and monsoon season brings dramatic mist and greenery, though trails can get slippery — sturdy footwear is recommended either way.
